Some children become citizens through a parent. Many families miss this. The rules are strict.

Lesson words

This lesson surprises many parents. A child does not always become a citizen just because a parent becomes a citizen. And some children already became citizens and the family does not know. In some cases, a child under 18 can get citizenship through a parent. The child usually must have a green card. The child usually must live in the United States in the legal and physical custody of a U.S. citizen parent. Other rules can apply. Birth outside the United States is different from birth here. Adoption is different again. Families use Form N-600 to ask for a Certificate of Citizenship. That form is not the same as N-400. Do not guess your child’s status from this video. Do not pay a notario to add the children. Read the official pages. Then get real legal help if you are not sure.

This is education. It is not legal advice. Only USCIS decides your case. Government forms are free at uscis.gov.
